Original artist’s caricature of a smiling Ike, ink on artist’s cardstock, 13 x 16.5, signed in ink at lower left, “Dwight D. Eisenhower”; the artist, Don Bevan, has also signed at lower right. Bevan, coauthor of the popular Broadway hit Stalag 17, is perhaps best known as the longtime official caricaturist for Sardi’s, the legendary Manhattan hot spot. From the late 1940s until his retirement in 1974, Bevan produced hundreds of whimsical celebrity portraits, scores of which still decorate Sardi’s walls.
