As governor, a year after the Civil War

Union general (1824–1881) and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac; the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word “sideburns.” Partially printed DS, signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page, 12 x 8, June 8, 1866. An official appointment for Daniel N. Paine as Justice of the Peace of Smithfield, Rhode Island, signed by Burnside as governor. Matted with two images to an overall size of 16 x 18. In fine condition, with a touch of faint scattered soiling and vertical fold touching signature. R&R COA.
