Commissioning a member of a prominent New York family

First chief justice of the Supreme Court. In 1795 he negotiated “Jay’s Treaty” with England, in which America agreed to pay its pre-war debts in return for Britain leaving the Northwest. DS, one page, 14.75 x 9, April 19, 1797. Governor Jay appoints Johannes C. Decker as an Ensign in the Ulster County militia. In very good condition, with overall creasing and wrinkling, central vertical fold and light edge wear. Johannes Cornelius Decker (1767-1814) was a member of the prominent family whose farm in Ulster County, New York is an 18th century rural Dutch home near the Hudson River were five generations of the Decker family lived, beginning with Johannes Janse Broerson Decker in 1694.
