DS signed by Monroe as president, “James Monroe,” and “John Quincy Adams” as Secretary of State, one page, 11.25 x 14.5, February 26, 1819. Patent issued to Thomas Pierce who “has invented a new & useful improvement in the Boiler for Distilleries, Steamboats, or any kind of Machinery.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Monroe and countersigned by his Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and Attorney General William Wirt. Attached second page is Pierce’s handwritten description of his improvement, signed at the conclusion by Pierce. In good to very good condition, with moderate storage folds, scattered light foxing and toning, small area of paper loss for ribbon and light wrinkling.
