Hand-addressed and free franked address panel, 5.25 x 3.25, addressed in Jackson’s hand to “Mr. R. E. W. Earle, Nashville, Tennessee,” and franked across the top, “Free, Andrew Jackson.” Panel bears a July 20, Washington postmark as well as a “Free” stamp.” In fine condition, with a light vertical fold through first letter of signature and some scattered light soiling. Earle was an American historical and portrait painter. Like so many of the colonial craftsmen, Earl was self-taught, and for many years was an itinerant painter. In 1775, Earl visited Lexington and Concord, which were the sites of recent battles in the American Revolution. Together with engraver Amos Doolittle, he painted four of his most famous pictures, all battle scenes. Earle’s portrait of Jackson hangs in the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute.
