Description

Washington pays tribute to McKinley, “He was always interested in the process of the Negro people and never hesitated to express his sympathy with their efforts to succeed.”

TLS, one page, 6 x 8.5, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, September 16, 1907. Letter to the Assistant Secretary of the McKinley Memorial Association. In full, “I sincerely regret that my engagements are such as to prevent attendance upon the ceremonies in connection with the dedication of the monument erected in memory of the lamented William McKinley. I should count it a rare privilege to be present upon this occasion if it were possible for me to arrange otherwise. The life of the great President, lived so simply and humbly, is worthy of emulation of fellow Americans everywhere. He was always interested in the process of the Negro people and never hesitated to express his sympathy with their efforts to succeed.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Washington. In fine condition, with a mild shade of toning, two punch holes to left edge and some mild overall spreading of ink to typed text. R&R COA.
