Partially printed DS, one page, 13 x 8.75, May 1, 1777. A document appointing John Jackson, Esquire as “First Lieutenant of a company in the regiment commanded by Henry Jackson, Esquire.” The reverse bears a manuscript discharge for Jackson, signed “W. Heath MG” and dated October 27, 1778. Major General William Heath (1737–1814) participated in the defense of New York City during the Revolution and saw further action at the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of Harlem Heights, and the Battle of White Plains. In very good condition, with two folds and associated small chips slightly touching signature, small holes at intersections of folds, faint scattered spotting and show-through, and entire reverse expertly silked for stabilization. Hancock’s signature is exceptionally bold and dark; military commissions signed by him with the addition of an integral discharge are of the greatest scarcity. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
