Description

Yankee Doodle no-show: President Buchanan declines to participate in Boston’s “celebration of the approaching anniversary of American Independence”

ALS as president, one page, 6.25 x 8, June 19, 1858. Buchanan writes to the Honorable F. W. Lincoln, Jr. In full: “I have had the honor to receive your official invitation to participate with the City government of Boston in the celebration of the approaching anniversary of American Independence. I should be much gratified were it in my power to accept this invitation & therefore deeply regret that public business will confine me in this city for several weeks to come. Feeling much indebted to you for the kind & courteous terms which you employed in extending the invitation I remain yours very respectfully….” Formerly part of the Douglass Campbell collection of presidential letters sold by Christie’s in 2002. One of the intersecting mailing folds slightly touches the signature and just a hint of mild toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition. A terrific and most uncommon association with America’s most important national holiday! LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
