Description

On meeting with Einstein: “There was ... only a sense of concern that the Nazis might be the sole possessors of an atomic bomb”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Hoover Institution letterhead, November 19, 1986. Teller writes to Gerard Granat. In part: “Thank you for your inquiry about the Einstein letter…. It did not seem to me that Einstein was in any way unhappy with the letter. As I report in the article, his only comment was to muse: ‘this will be the first time.’ We were served tea and cookies, and there was no sense of unhappiness connected with the occasion, only a sense of concern that the Nazis might be the sole possessors of an atomic bomb…. I am well aware of the problem of history books that interpret and embellish rather than report….” The letter was also later signed by Enola Gay bombardier Thomas Ferebee at lower left. Accompanied by an unsigned copy of an article by Teller mentioned elsewhere in the letter. A hint of toning to top edge and Granat’s descriptive pencil notation beneath Ferebee’s signature, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA. From the Jerry Granat collection.
