Description

Secretary of State Van Buren writes regarding renewal of trade with the West Indies

LS signed “M. Van Buren,” one page, 7.75 x 9, October 18, 1830. Secretary of State Van Buren sends a letter to the collector at New Haven, William Ellis. In part, “Your letter…has been received by this Department. In answer to the inquiry it contains, as to the time when the British West India ports will be opened to our vessels, under the late arrangement, I have to state that it is expected by this Government, that Great Britain will, without delay, take the necessary measures to that effect, upon the receipt of the President’s proclamation of the 5th inst.” In good condition, with tape to three edges on reverse, scattered toning and foxing, with toning heavier to edges and a small hole to left side. Van Buren is referring to a treaty with Great Britain recently signed by President Andrew Jackson that renewed trade with the West Indies. Letter is entirely legible with Van Buren’s signature largely unaffected by the flaws. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
