Rocking down the highway! Washington directs a musical request to “the Charleston Interstate Exposition Company.”

Author of Up From Slavery who founded The Tuskegee Institute to provide young blacks with educational opportunities. TLS, one page, 8 x 11, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, March 11, 1901. Letter to Mr. Wilson regarding a musical request. In part, “Mr. John H. Averill or Colonel F. W. Wagener are leading officials of the Charleston Interstate Exposition Company, and would be pleased to give you any information with reference to having your orchestra heard during the exposition season.” Washington also adds a short handwritten postscript, “Both of these gentlemen may be addressed at Charleston, SC.” Mailing folds, pencil notation to text, scattered soiling and toning and some mild edge wear, otherwise very good condition.
