ALS, signed “M. K. Gandhi,” one page, 6.25 x 8, July 12, 1934. Gandhi writes to J[ames] S[trachey] Barnes (1890–1955), a British supporter of Fascism who wrote a number of political studies. In full: “I am writing this in a moving train. Many thanks for your good wishes. So long as God wants me on this earth, there will be miraculous escapes. Thanks also for the names of books on the Roman Catholic faith. I look forward to meeting you & knowing all about the scheme you have in mind.” The “miraculous escape” Gandhi alludes to took place in the previous month, on June 25, when radical orthodox Hindus threw a bomb at the motorcade in which Gandhi was riding en route to a speech in Poona. Though several members of the entourage were severely injured, Gandhi himself escaped unscathed. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Gandhi’s hand. Intersecting mailing folds and a few faint, tiny spots, otherwise fine, clean condition. An unusually fresh and bright example with an association of exceptional interest!
