Description

War-dated Monroe letter written while holding two cabinet positions

War-dated ALS signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 8 x 10, March 28, 1814. Letter to General John Mason. In full, “Will you have the goodness to inform me whether the enclosed notice relates, to a part or sum which ought to have been comprized [sic] in the previous note, mentioned in your last, or is it a distinct claim, for which I must provide.” Monroe also adds a postscript reading, “I send the stamp paper you requested in your last. On the subject of my report concerning retaliation, I shall be happy to see you as soon as convenient. It is a perplexing & possible same business.” Second integral page bears an integral address page addressed in Monroe’s hand. In very good condition, with mailing folds, scattered creasing and a light shade of overall toning. Monroe served as Secretary of State from 1811 to 1814. When he was appointed to Secretary of War in 1814, he stayed on as the interim Secretary of State. In 1815 he was again commissioned as the permanent Secretary of State, and left his position as Secretary of War. Thus from October 1, 1814, to February 28, 1815, Monroe held the two cabinet posts. Monroe stayed on as Secretary of State until the end of the James Madison Presidency, and the following day Monroe began his term as the new President of the United States. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
