Emperor of Russia (born 1754) from 1796 until his assassination in 1801. A champion of the poorer classes, his sweeping reforms alienated the Russian nobility and were thought to have provided a prime motivation for the conspiracy that led to his brutal death. Engraved DS on parchment, in Russian, one page, 16 x 11, 1797. An untranslated official document, evidently an appointment or commendation. A remnant of the wax seal remains at lower left. In fair condition, with soiling, wrinkling, scattered staining, tears (tape repaired from reverse), and signature on the light side. R&R COA.
