Description

Appointing a first lieutenant in America’s fledgling Navy less than a year after signing the Declaration of Independence

Scarce partially printed DS, one page, 12.25 x 8, February 7 [1777]. A document appointing William Monan[?] first lieutenant on the armed sloop Hornet, “fitted out for the Defence of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof.” Hancock signs beside the printed title “President.” Though the year is indistinct (see below), the final digit is clearly “7,” corresponding to Hancock’s term as President of the Second Continental Congress (May 24, 1775 to October 31, 1777). In good condition, with scattered holes and separations along folds (affecting recipient’s last name, year, and Hancock’s paraph), scattered light soiling and staining, chips and edge tears, and expertly repaired loss to lower right corner touching a few words of printed text. Hancock’s signature is dark and mostly unaffected. A seldom-seen format for the great statesman and patriot! LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
