Description

Quantum pioneer goes under the knife

Nobel Prize–winning German physicist (1858–1947) who pioneered the understanding of quantum theory. ALS in German, signed “Dr. M. Planck,” one page, 5.75 x 4, May 1, 1944. Letter to a friend, informing him of his upcoming surgery. In part, “For a special reason I must ask you not to send any communications to me for the next few weeks or even months. I will soon undergo surgery and cannot predict when I will be able to return to work…When the time comes, I will let you know immediately.” Reverse is addressed in Planck’s hand, with his signature appearing again in the return address area, “Prof. Planck.” Crisp vertical fold, a couple trivial wrinkles and two small punch holes to left edge, otherwise fine condition. Earlier in the same year, his home in Berlin was completely destroyed by an air raid, annihilating his entire scientific records and correspondence. R&R COA.
