Description

American businessman and philanthropist (1843–1899) who succeeded his father and grandfather as head of the New York Central Railroad. The mansion he had built in Newport, Rhode Island, the “Breakers,” is among the largest and most lavish private residences ever constructed. LS signed “C. Vanderbilt, 1st V.P.,” one lightly lined page, 5 x 8, New York Central & Hudson River Railroad letterhead, June 6, 1879. Vanderbilt writes to W. B. Stearns of the Fitchburg Railroad. In full: “As requested, I enclose herewith a pass for Gov. Talbot & one, Albany to Nia. Falls & return.” Mailing fold lightly touching signature, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
