Official letter of state from the emperor appointing a foreign envoy who will “not betray the trust of your Excellency.”

Emperor of Japan, he acceded in 1926 and his reign was marked by rapid militarization and aggressive wars against China and the United States. WWII ended with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima and in 1946, he renounced his divinity in favor of a democratic constitutional monarchy. TLS in Japanese, two adjoining pages, 9.75 x 13.5, June 19, 1954. Letter of State addressed to the president of Bolivia. In full, “Your Excellency, On the occasion of the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony to be held at the Republic of Bolivia, the Japanese Government has appointed Mr. Kunio Morishita to attend the ceremony as the Japanese Ambassador on special mission (on behalf of Emperor Hirohito). In accordance with the regulations of the constitution of Japan, I hereby approve such appointment. Ambassador Kunio Morishita shall attend this enlightening ceremony in order to execute his mission, and not only strain to strengthen the mutual relationship between your country and Japan, but also not betray the trust of your Excellency. On this joyous occasion, I would like to express my congratulations and wish for your health and the prosperity of your country.” Countersigned by both Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama and foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu.
