Description

Buffalo Bill signs during his glorious farewell tour

Frontiersman and entertainer. By the age of fifteen Cody had already been a horse wrangler, pony express rider, and unsuccessful prospector. He became a scout for the Union army and after the war took a job for a company that supplied meat for railroad construction crews, killing 4280 buffalo during 1867–1868. Dubbed “Buffalo Bill” by writer Ned Buntline, Cody organized his famous Wild West Show in 1883 and toured with it with great success for many years. Vintage crystal-clear 4 x 5.5 photo, affixed to its original 6 x 9 photographer’s mount, of Cody in full western regalia, signed in fountain pen, “W. F. Cody, ‘Buffalo Bill’ 1910.” In fine condition, with some light silvering and surface marks to image and some slight pooling of ink to a few letters of signature. Image quality is superlative with details of Cody’s embroidered gloves and jacket clearly outlined and defined. Buffalo Bill never retired, even though he had hoped to do so. Cody did two years of farewell performances while his show was combined with Pawnee Bill’s in 1908 but discovered at the end of the second year that he could not retire. Growing personal debts due to bad investments left him with little to retire on. Even after Cody left the Sells-Floto circus, his financial situation kept him performing with other wild west shows. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
