Description

To Russia with love ... and 5% interest

European Jewish financier (1777–1836) who founded his family’s famous banking dynasty handled Allied loans for the campaign against Napoleon. Rothschild helped to ensure Britain’s preeminence as a financial market when bonds he handled as an investment banker were denominated in sterling and the interest made payable to London and in pounds. Among the powers availing themselves of the new arrangements was Czarist Russia, which floated a loan for £3,500,000 in 1822. Three-language partially printed DS, signed “N. M. Rothschild, Contractor” along the right edge of the first page, one page, both sides, 9.5 x 14. A bond for a Russian 5% Loan of 1822. Both sides bear an embossed seal with the legend “Russian Loan 1822 contracted by N. M. Rothschild.” In fair condition (as is typical for examples of this document), with soiling, folds, tears and chips (one slightly affecting signature), and a few complete separations (some with tape repairs). LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
