Description

Travel advisory: “I would ... especially advise against going to Ethiopia”

Commander of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I and one of the most celebrated soldiers in American history (1860–1948). TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Royal Monceau Hotel, Paris letterhead, October 8, 1935. Pershing writes to Charles Sumner Bird in Massachusetts. In part: “I am planning to return to the States very soon and shall not waste much time before going to Tucson. It is quite an undertaking for you to go to Egypt, and I wonder whether it is a very wise thing for you to do at this time. I would, however, especially advise against going to Ethiopia. I am saying this although you will probably not receive this letter until after you have returned. So I hope you will be none the worse for the wear.” In very good condition, with one mailing fold through signature, light wrinkling and edge tear to blank portion, and a few small, faint stains. R&R COA.
