Truman appoints a former senator to a District Judge position

DS as president, one page, 20 x 16, January 3, 1951. President Truman appoints Edward L. Leahy to the position of “United States District Judge for the District of Rhode Island.” Signed at the bottom in black ink by Truman and countersigned by Attorney General J. Howard McGrath. Document is affixed to an identical size piece of heavy artist’s board. In very fine condition, with light block of toning from previous display. Gold foil seal is intact and maintains its luster. Leahy was appointed, on August 24, 1949, as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. Howard McGrath and served from August 24, 1949, to December 18, 1950, a successor having been elected and qualified; he was not a candidate for election to the vacancy. From January 1951 to his death, he was a United States district court judge for the district of Rhode Island. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
