Partially printed DS as president, one page, 18.5 x 13, March 6, 1862. On March 9, three days after Lincoln made this appointment, the legendary ironclad U.S.S. Monitor faced the Confederate ship Merrimac in the most famous naval engagement of the Civil War. The document is countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward and bears its original embossed seal at lower left. Attractively matted and framed with two unsigned original CDVs to an overall size of 33.75 x 23.75. In very good condition, with one vertical fold through first name of signature, small separations along other folds (affecting Seward’s signature), very faint show-through behind Lincoln’s signature, some wrinkling, and small chip to top edge. Though these faults are noted for the sake of strict accuracy, their visual impact is minimal, and one’s eye can’t help but be immediately struck by the extraordinary brightness of the document and the gorgeous, virtually flawless signature. Diplomatic appointments represent one of the most elusive categories of official documents signed by Lincoln. Oversized. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
