Description

Kissin’ half-sister? Byron writes to the sibling who was his rumored lover

Highly influential British poet, politician, soldier, and adventurer, sexual and otherwise (1788–1824), who takes a place as the most colorful literary figure of the Romantic era. His works include such classics as Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage and Don Juan. Dark ink signature, “Byron,” on a 4.25 x 2.5 panel addressed in his hand to “The Honble. Mrs. [Augusta] Leigh” in Newmarket. The panel is affixed to a larger slip which bears the early ink notation “Lord Byron, given to Georgina Wheatley, by his sister Mrs. Leigh.” Leigh (1783–1851), Byron’s half-sister, is thought by many historians to also have been the poet’s intimate partner, and it is believed that the union produced a daughter, Elizabeth Medora Leigh. In fine condition, with faint vertical fold and small chip at right edge. R&R COA.
