Description

Old Kinderhook and the Flower Guy sign a dragoons appointment

DS, signed “M. Van Buren” (as President) and “J. R. Poinsett” (as Secretary of War), one page, 13.75 x 17.75, February 20, 1840. A commission appointing James H. Carleton Second Lieutenant the First Regiment of Dragoons. In addition to his position as Van Buren’s Secretary of War, Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779–1851) variously served as U.S. Representative, America’s first Ambassador to Mexico, and, in a colorful display of versatility and industry, the man who developed the bright red flowering plant that was named in his honor. The paper seal remains intact at upper left. In fine condition, with usual folds and mild scattered soiling. The signatures are dark and clear. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
