Carleton Second Lieutenant the First Regiment of Dragoons. In addition to his position as Van Buren’s Secretary of War, Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779–1851) variously served as U.S. Representative, America’s first Ambassador to Mexico, and, in a colorful display of versatility and industry, the man who developed the bright red flowering plant that was named in his honor.
