Large, dark ink endorsement as president, “Approved May 4th 1831, Andrew Jackson,” at the conclusion of a letter from the Navy Department, one page both sides, 7.5 x 9, May 3, 1831. The letter concerns a parcel of property adjacent to the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. In part: “The lots alluded to … lie adjoining the Navy Yard and are regarded as being necessary to be purchased to complete the square and give all the space desired for the operations of the establishment…. The bona fide title is vested in the trustees of Pennock. The letter of the agent explains the object of the proposition which has been made to the trustees by order of the Department: But it is deemed proper that the measure should have your special sanction.” Matted and framed (so both sides of the letter are visible) with a nineteenth-century portrait engraving and engraved plaque to an overall size of 24.5 x 19.5. One mailing fold touching signature and file holes at top edge, otherwise fine, bright condition. An exceptionally clean and bold signature that measures some 5.5Þ in length!
