Description

Wet and wild: Washington signs a bill from the “river improvement” company he cofounded

Manuscript DS, signed “Go: Washington,” one page, 4 x 5, August 7, 1786. A bill issued to (or by) the “Potomack Company” in the amount of £6.15.2 1/2. The Potomac Company was established in 1785 with the purpose of undertaking improvement projects to make the Potomac River more navigable, primarily through the construction of “skirting” canals around the river’s major falls. At the end of his life, Washington, a cofounder and president of the company, willed his fifty shares toward what would become George Washington University. The bill is written and signed in the hand of Gurden Chapin, the cashier; Washington has signed under the notation “allowed,” along with two others, John Fitzgerald and George Griffin. Matted and framed with a nineteenth-century portrait engraving and engraved plaque to an overall size of 15.5 x 12.75. In very good condition, with two very faint vertical folds (one touching a single letter of signature), very faint show-through from writing on reverse, and signature on the light side but fully legible. A clean example of fresh, bright appearance. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
