Description

Franking a letter to one of West Point’s original graduates

Franking signature, “free, Th: Jefferson,” on a 5.5 x 3.5 address leaf addressed to General Swift in New York and bearing an indistinct postmark. A touch of mild soiling and tears and chip to top edge (repaired from the reverse and well away from the signature), otherwise fine condition. The writing is clean, bold, and exceptionally dark. Joseph Gardner Swift (1783–1865), appointed a cadet by John Adams, was one of two members of the original graduating class of West Point in 1802. He later served as chief engineer and superintendent of the Academy, and, during the War of 1812, chief engineer of the Northern Army. Following his resignation from the military in 1818, Swift served as Surveyor for the Port of New York and chief engineer for a number of railroads. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
