Danish physicist (1771–1851) best known for the discovery of electromagnetism. Scarce ALS in German, signed “H. C. Oersted,” three pages on two adjacent sheets, 5 x 7.5, May 20, 1843. Oersted writes to Danish chemist Levy in Paris. In part: “I should inform you about some scientific news, however, I would need more time. As far as I can remember, you already know that for a long time I have been working on the nature of beauty. My short paper on this subject will be finished next month.… I have followed philosophy, with which I became involved through my participation in German and Nordic sciences, however, I may regard it as something really essential, due to the fact that I didn’t base it on some kind of metaphysical sentence but on experiences that I only need to put into order and explain."
