TLS as president, one page, 6 x 7.75, White House letterhead, November 2, 1908. Roosevelt writes to Rev. J. L. Belford in Brooklyn. In full: “That is fine! The editorial is admirable and, my dear fellow, the spirit behind it, the spirit of the man that wrote it, is best of all! Now can not you soon come on here and take lunch with me? There are many things I would like to talk over with you.” In good condition, with signature on the light side (though fully legible), light, even toning, and a few chips and tears (one through first name of signature) stabilized by silking to entire reverse. On the following day, Roosevelt’s hand-picked successor, William Howard Taft, enjoyed an election landslide over William Jennings Bryan; four years later, Roosevelt, newly minted as a Progressive, tried to unseat Taft, splitting the Republican vote and placing Wilson in the White House.
