LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 7.75, August 28, 1880. Garfield writes to M. E. Ingalls of the Industrial Exhibition in Cincinnati. In part: “I should be very glad to attend the exposition but find it will be impossible. Beside my other engagements, two of my children are to start away to New England to school about that time.” Faint mailing fold and subtle strip of soiling lightly touching signature, otherwise fine, crisp condition.
