Description

Active in the Rhode Island Sons of Liberty, he was sent to the Continental Congress in 1776 to replace Samuel Ward, who had died. He was immediately appointed to the Marine committee and later participated in several others including the committee for foreign relations. DS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.25 x 7.5, March 1764. Interesting three-page document, written in Ellery’s hand and signed in the text, reads in small part, “Extracted by William Ellery from a letter…to Mr. William West of Philadelphia who labored under a vitiated state of blood and relaxation of solids.” Document goes on to offer detailed accounts pertaining to medicine with prescriptions for various ailments.
