Description

On the almighty dollar: “I need not tell you the Omnipotence of ready money to a merchant”

Brigadier general in the Continental Army (1726–1806) who proved himself a capable administrator and who played a major role in the American victory at Saratoga in 1777. In 1778, he permitted his name to be associated with the “Conway Cabal,” a plot to have Gates supplant Washington as commander in chief; though not formally implicated, Gates never truly regained Washington’s friendship or trust, and his role in the war was thereafter greatly reduced. He retired to his Virginia plantation in 1783. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 9, October 12, 1791. Gates writes to Henry Deginger in Shepherdstown, Virginia. In part: “I waited upon Mr. Murray … [who] said, he was … with an English Gentleman, who had view’d the land, and was going immediately from home, to take a more exact view the premises, before he finally concluded upon the purchases…. In my own opinion I am satisfied, he who pays the most money down, will be the purchaser, for I need not tell you the Omnipotence of ready money to a merchant.” The letter retains its integral address leaf. In very good condition, with a few brushes to text, small hole affecting two words, and light scattered toning and wrinkling. The letter is clearly penned and fully legible. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
