Signed book: Atomic Energy: The Official Report on the Development of the Atomic Bomb under the Auspices of the United States Government, 1940–1945. First trade edition. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1945. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8, 264 pages. Clearly signed in ink on the front free end page, “J. R. Oppenheimer,” the “Father of the Atomic Bomb” (1904–1967) who directed the Manhattan Project and later became embroiled in controversy over his political views and activities. The inside front cover has also been signed by three others: W. S. Parsons (head of the Ordnance Division of the Manhattan Project); R. B. Brode (head of the Fuse Development Group under Parsons); and R. T. Bainbridge (head of the High Explosives Development Group and, later, the Instrumentation Group, both under Parsons). The book was originally owned by Charles E. Runyan, a member of the civilian/scientific team whose exact duties are unclear, who has signed on the inside rear cover and whose stamped initials appear on the front cover. A touch of light wear to extremities, otherwise fine, clean condition. A relic with an association of great significance! LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
