Description

The defining Truman image: oversized signed photo of Truman holding aloft “Dewey Defeats Truman” headline

On the morning after the 1948 presidential election, the Chicago Daily Tribune’s headline read “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.” That’s what the Republicans, the polls, the newspapers, the political writers, and even many Democrats had expected. But in the largest political upset in U.S. history, Harry S. Truman surprised everyone when he, and not Thomas E. Dewey, won the 1948 election for president of the United States. Vintage glossy 14 x 11 photo of a beaming Truman holding up a copy of the November 3, 1948, Chicago Tribune announcing “Dewey Defeats Truman,” signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Courtney Barber, with happy memories! 8/15/1956 Harry Truman.” Double cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 21.5 x 19. In very good condition, with noticeable diagonal crease to top right corner, scattered light crazing to finish and several other small creases and impressions. Not only one of the most memorable Truman or presidential photos, but one of the twentieth century’s most memorable and recognizable images. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
