Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Revolutionary War-dated DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.25 x 6.25, March 21, 1777. Pay order to State Treasurer John Lawrence for payment to James Brown the sum of “Eight Pounds Nineteen Shillings & four pence Lawfull Money for his Expence of Sickness in the Northern Army.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Ellsworth. In fine condition, with light show-through from docketing on reverse and some light wrinkling. R&R COA.
