Distinguished statesman and three-time presidential candidate (1777–1852) who became known as the Great Compromiser for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 8 x 9, March 1808. Legal letter referencing debts surrounding the hiring of a slave. In part, “Samuel Clay complains of Joseph Tannehill and Marquis Colmes in custody &c. of a plea that they render to the plt the sum of £20 which to him they owe and from him unjustly detain…to pay to the said plt the said sum of £20 for the hire of a negro man named Ned for the year 1806.” Accompanied by an unsigned and unrelated one page legal document in Clay’s hand. In very good condition, with scattered light blocks of toning, light mirroring of ink from another document or letter and a bit of trivial paper loss at junction of folds.
