Description

Edison hand-written interview answers concerning a rubber substitute

Thomas Edison’s handwritten answers, in pencil, to three questions posed to him by a high school student on March 28, 1930, on an 8 x 11 ruled sheet. At the time of the interview, Edison was staying at Harvey Firestone’s estate in Miami Beach. The answers are as follows; the questions can be reasonably intuited. “The time is uncertain - it will require two years longer to perfect the unit making up the factory - I am building a small unit now at Ft. Myers and a larger unit will be built at Mr. Ford’s plantation near Savannah, Ga. It will require several years to breed high yielding plants. It is not intended to produce rubber commercially but for an emergency in case of war when our supply of rubber would be cut off. I have collected approximately 14,500 plants so far in the US of which 1240 contain rubber and I am still collecting.” Accompanied by an envelope stating “Interview with Thomas A. Edison at Harvey Firestone’s Estate in Miami Beach on March 28, 1930. It is the actual handwriting of Edison.” In fine condition, with several storage folds. R&R COA.
