In part, “Pain is not, according to the Tridentine Doctrine (Sess. 25) the essential attribute of Purgatory, but imprisonment; tho’ pain, as a general accompaniment of imprisonment, enters into our received teaching…The Council of Trent defines ‘Purgatorium esse, animasque ibi detentas fidelium suffragiis juvari.’ There is nothing about pain here; the notion of a prison implies disadvantage certainly, but not pain, unless the Pope is now in pain, because confined to the Vatican & its garden.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Newman’s hand.
