Description

Cardinal Newman writes a ‘hell’ of a letter about Purgatory

Anglican leader of the Oxford Movement who became a Roman Catholic and wrote the well known hymn Lead, Kindly Light. ALS signed “John H. Newman,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, June 16, 1878. Interesting letter on theological matters written to Reverend D. Moore. In part, “Pain is not, according to the Tridentine Doctrine (Sess. 25) the essential attribute of Purgatory, but imprisonment; tho’ pain, as a general accompaniment of imprisonment, enters into our received teaching…The Council of Trent defines ‘Purgatorium esse, animasque ibi detentas fidelium suffragiis juvari.’ There is nothing about pain here; the notion of a prison implies disadvantage certainly, but not pain, unless the Pope is now in pain, because confined to the Vatican & its garden.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Newman’s hand. In fine condition, with strip of mounting remnant to right edge of signed page and a bit of light soiling. R&R COA.
