Recommending a prospective midshipman

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 8.5, no date [circa late 1830s–early 1840s]. A letter of recommendation to Secretary of the Navy James K. Paulding. In full: “The enclosed will give you the age of Martin Lopes, who is an applicant for a midshipman’s warrant.” Folds and a few faint spots, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
