Description

Signing his famous RAF portrait

Exceptionally impressive matte-finish 10 x 12.5 photo on a 12.75 x 17 mount, a photographic reproduction of Douglas Chandor’s famous 1946 painting of Churchill in his RAF uniform, signed in ink on the mount below the image, “Winston S. Churchill.” The British-born Chandor (1897–1953), one of the most prominent portrait artists of his day, painted a number of important contemporary personalities, including Herbert Hoover and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. He was commissioned to immortalize the “Big Three” at the Yalta Conference in 1945, though the painting remained unfinished as a result of Stalin’s refusal to sit in person for the artist. His penetrating portrait of Churchill (one of a pair that also included Mrs. Churchill) takes a place among the best-known and most characteristic likenesses of the great leader. Housed in its original gilt and wood frame measuring 14 x 18 overall. In fresh, immaculate, very fine condition. The size, stunning image, and superlative state of preservation lend the present item a blue-chip status attained by a very select handful of signed Churchill photos. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
