Description

Signing a ship’s papers in the first months of his presidency

Scarce partially printed DS, one page, 19.5 x 15.5, May 13, 1797. A four-language ship’s papers issued to Samuel Roundy, “master or commander of the Schooner Industry of the burthen of ninety-one tons or thereabouts, laying at present in the port of Boston bound for Bordeaux and laden with Coffee, Fish & Sugar.” Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. The original paper seal remains intact. Housed in a custom-made folder. In good condition, with scattered light staining, several large losses to margins and text (the losses expertly restored with similar paper), and partial separations along folds (archivally reinforced). The document remains fully 90% intact, and, save for a tiny, trivial separation between the first and last names, Adams’ large, bold signature is completely unaffected. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
