English soldier and statesman (1599–1658) who led Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War, waged war against Scotland and Ireland and, following the execution of Charles I in 1653, became Lord Protector of Great Britain, a position he held until his death in 1658. After a yearlong reign by his son, Richard, the British throne was restored (to Charles II) and Cromwell’s body was exhumed and posthumously “executed.” Very rare ALS signed “O. Cromwell,” one page, 7.5 x 11.75, January 23, 1648. Cromwell writes to Edward Montagu, the 2nd Earl of Manchester (1602–1671). In full: “My Cosen Steward having a protection from my Lord of Manchester to secure him in all places from taxes. The urgent occasions doth desire mee to request you in a line or two to forboare molesting him in any such manner: his orders hath beene perused by mee, and yet justnes of it doth require forbearance as also it being recommended by ye Committee of Safety for ye Kingdome to my Lord of Manchester, where upon his protection was graunted Thus. Yr. ffriend to serve you….” In very good condition, with folds (short partial separations touching a few words), faint staining and scattered soiling, allover wrinkling, and collector’s ink notation at bottom edge. The writing and signature remain clear and dark, and the whole retains much visual appeal. All autograph material from Cromwell is scarce, and letters in his own hand are of exceeding rarity; apparently no other example has come to sale in the past twenty years.
