Description

More than 400 signatures from the Arthur administration, including Arthur and future Presidents Harrison and McKinley, cabinet members, members of Congress, military officers, and the entire Waite Supreme Court

Fantastic autograph album from the administration of Chester A. Arthur, containing approximately 400 signatures of the President, cabinet members, congressmen and senators, and military officers, contained in its original leather binding, 8 x 9.25, circa 1884. All of the pages are single-sided, all contain multiple signatures, and many of the signers have added 1884 dates and/or their official position. Among the more prominent signers: Chester A. Arthur (March 9, 1884); Secretary of State Fredk. T. Frelinghuysen; Robert Lincoln; Secretary of the Interior H. M. Teller; Secretary of the Treasury Chas. J. Folger; Attorney General Benjamin Harris Brewster; Postmaster General W. A. Grisham; all nine Supreme Court justices, on three consecutive pages (Chief Justice M[orrison] R. Waite and Associate Justices Sam. F. Miller, Stephen J. Field, Jos. P. Bradley, John M. Harlan, W. B. Woods, Stanley Matthews, Horace Gray, and Samuel Blatchford); M. C. Butler (Confederate general); Benj[amin] Harrison; John Sherman (younger brother of William T. Sherman and Secretary of State under McKinley); Wade Hampton (Confederate general); H[enry] W. Slocum (Union general who fought at Gettysburg and accompanied Sherman on the March to the Sea); and Wm. McKinley, Jr. A clue to the age and gender of the original collector lies in identical inscriptions from two different congressmen: “Be a good boy!” In fine condition, with an occasional brush and wear to binding. Though a handful of pages show a minor touch of soiling, the vast majority remain startlingly clean and bright, the signatures dark and bold, the whole comprising a one-of-a-kind collection of perfect and near-perfect examples.
