ANS signed “A. Lincoln,” on a 5 x 2.25 slip affixed to a larger card, August 12, 1864. In full: “Please send this & charges to me.” At the time Lincoln signed this document, Union troops had already made much headway into Georgia and were quickly closing in on Atlanta. In one of the greatest and most pivotal victories of the war, Sherman finally seized the city on September 2. Two months later, on November 15, Sherman embarked on his triumphant March to the Sea, ultimately securing the crucial port of Savannah—and securing his own fame as one of the greatest military commanders in American history. In very good condition, with light scattered soiling and faint staining, and writing on the light side, though still quite clear and fully legible. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
