Magnificent DS, signed by Jefferson as President, “Th: Jefferson,” and Madison as Secretary of State, “James Madison,” one page, 22.75 x 18, August 19, 1805. Four language ship’s papers stating “Be it known that leave and permission are hereby given to Henry Gardner, master or commander of the ship called Fame of Providence of the burthen of 221: 13/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of Newport bound for Tonningen and laden with White and Brown Sugar, Segars and Molasses to depart and proceed with this said ship on his said voyage, such ship having been visited and the said Henry Garnder having made oath before the proper officer, that the said ship belongs to one or more of the citizens of the United States of America and to him or them only.” In fine condition, with several folds, some light creasing, a couple minor repairs to trivial small holes and two small pieces of mounting tape on reverse.
