Hezekiah Ford Douglass, a preacher, soldier, and close associate of eminent orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass (but not a relation), was himself a speaker and activist for antislavery causes. ALS signed “H. Ford Douglass,” one page, November 6, 1858. Douglass’ son writes to Thomas Peiner, Esq. In part: “I have made an arrangement with Fred. Douglass to visit Illinois in the month of Feb. He will deliver 2 lectures … in afternoon ‘Self Made Men’ in the Evening the ‘Races.’ I will bring him to Aurora if the proper arrangements can be made with a small admission fee of 15 cents. This will be done to pay expenses as he charges Fifty Dollars per day or twenty-five dollars a lecture.” In fine condition, with a few tiny chips to left margin (not affecting text). R&R COA.
