DS, two pages, 10.75 x 16, August 7, 1865. A Presidential pardon for Benjamin F. Kinsey of Rappahannock County, Virginia, “who has made himself liable to heavy pains and penalties,” for “taking part in the late rebellion against the Government of the United States.” The pardon is declared void if Kinsey “shall hereafter, at any time, acquire any property whatever in slaves, or make use of slave labor.” Countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward. In fair to good condition, with trimming to one page, scattered staining and spots (one near but not touching signature), folds (one touching signature; scattered associated holes and separations, some tape-repaired from the reverse), and a few chips and small losses to edges. Despite these faults, the text remains completely intact and fully readable, and Johnson’s signature remains clear, dark, and otherwise unaffected. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
