Description

Not yet a traitor: Then-Secretary of War Davis signs a military appointment with President Pierce

Partially printed DS, signed “Franklin Pierce” and “Jeffer. Davis,” one page on vellum, 14.25 x 17.5, March 5, 1853. A document appointing Charles R. Woods as Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Infantry. The embossed paper seal remains intact. Items with a direct association between Davis and the American presidency are uncommon and avidly sought by collectors; the present document is as attractive an example as one is ever likely to find! In fine, fresh condition, with folds (one light fold touching Pierce’s signature) and a hint of mild wrinkling, the signatures outstandingly bold and dark. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
