An agreement for the broadcast of the musical Lady in the Dark (with book by Moss Hart, lyrics by Gershwin, and music by Weill), for which the collaborators are to receive a royalty of $750.00. Following brother George’s death in 1937, Ira became involved in projects with a number of other highly regarded composers, including Weill, Jerome Kern, and Aaron Copland. Lady in the Dark opened on Broadway on January 23, 1941, and ran for a respectable 467 performances; a film version starring Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland was released in 1944. Weill is in relatively short supply (and high demand) among twentieth-century composers, and music-related documents, particularly those cosigned by a colleague as distinguished as Gershwin, are of notable scarcity.
